In accordance with the Cultural Accord between SAMA and Italy’s Ministry of Culture signed in 2023, the museum contacted the Ministry of Culture and the Carabinieri’s Cultural Heritage Protection unit about the proposed acquisition of the cup. The Ministry of Culture provided formal notification (dated April 18, 2025) confirming that they have no evidence that the cup was illegally exported from Italy.

Section of the AAMD Guidelines relied upon for the exception to 1970
Gift or bequest expected or on loan prior to 2008
Explain why the object fits the exception set forth above
The objects qualifies as an exception to the 1970 rule because Nanette Kelekian signed a will prior to 2008 that documents her intent to bequeath the object to the Museum. Additionally, Charles D. Kelekian (d. 1982) had a practice of collecting works once owned by the Dikran G. Kelekian gallery, dissolved in 1952. He transferred many of these works to his daughter, Nanette, during his lifetime. Her records indicate this work was transferred in by 1978.

Cumulative facts and circumstances
Explain why the object fits the exception set forth above
Although Dorothy Sturm began collecting in the 1960s or 70s, the Brooks has been unable to substantiate the precise date of acquisition of this and other coins in collection as they were acquired by the donor after her death in 1988. The coin greatly enhances the Brooks’ collection of Ancient art of the Mediterranean world.
