Informed judgement that works were outside of the country of modern discovery before 1970
Explain why the object fits the exception set forth above
This work has confirmed provenance to 1985 when it was sold at auction to its prior owner. This large statuette belongs to a class of statuettes produced to imitate or echo monumental sculptures in bronze or marble. Its large scale, ornate baroque style and quality of execution point to a major colorplastic workshop in Asia Minor, probably Myrina. Although the museum has an outstanding collection of Greek terracottas, this example is an important addition because of its large scale, rich drapery, unusual iconography, excellent preservation, and quality of execution.
