Museum's Definition of Antiquity
Mediterranean World, ca. 5000 BCE to 500 CE

Section of the AAMD Guidelines relied upon for the exception to 1970
Cumulative facts and circumstances
Explain why the object fits the exception set forth above
Ms. Lili Kaufmann purchased several other Roman glass objects, in Israel between 1988 and 2000, from a small selection of galleries, including Louvre gallery and Barakat and Sons gallery in Jerusalem and Denny Pinkus Antiquarium in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. It’s highly likely that this object was acquired from one of those galleries, in the 1990s.

The exact date of the purchase is unknown, and attempts to determine the exact date or the gallery where it was acquired were unsuccessful.

The Kaufmann pieces (seven total) add significantly to the Museum’s small collection of ca. 20 ancient glassware. Four of the types are not currently in the Antiquities Collection. The acquisition of seven Roman glass objects signals the widening interest of the Museum’s collecting area beyond ancient Greek vases and Roman sculpture. This acquisition may encourage the further growth of the Museum’s Antiquities holdings.

Section of the AAMD Guidelines relied upon for the exception to 1970
Gift or bequest expected or on loan prior to 2008
Explain why the object fits the exception set forth above
The object qualifies as an exception to the 1970 rule because Nanette Kelekian signed a will prior to 2008 that documents her intent to bequeath the work to the Museum. Additionally, Charles D. Kelekian (d. 1982) had a practice of collecting many works once owned by the Dikran G. Kelekian gallery, dissolved in 1952. He transferred many of these works to his daughter, Nanette, during his lifetime. Her records indicate this work was transferred after 1970.
