The Museum has a small but significant collection of Tibetan art including paintings and scrolls, as well as a single illuminated cover and frontispiece for a manuscript, but no examples of the actual illuminated folios or leaves from such manuscripts. Significant examples of this specific form of manuscript and illustration are rare. This exceptional folio is one of a pair, and the two together demonstrate the importance of this medium and form in the Tibetan culture, particularly when they are held in dialogue with the Tibetan paintings and thangka illustrating similar themes and stories, in our collection.
