Cumulative facts and circumstances
Explain why the object fits the exception set forth above
The work has provenance established to 1985. Simon Digby, who was born in India to English parents, was a former curator of the Ashmolean Museum and later an independent scholar. John Siudmak has confirmed that he saw this work in Simon Digby’s collection in the United Kingdom in 1985. Early medieval bronzes of Jain deities - this is a ca. 10th century work - are extremely rare and this work is the first Jain image of a female deity in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection.
