Explain why the object fits the exception set forth above
Given the death of the previous owner in early 1984, this lid was almost certainly out of Egypt by 1983, when Egypt's Law of the Protection of Antiquities went into effect. For an unusual and relatively minor object such as this, it may not be reasonable to expect an extensively documented provenance before Professor Gross's ownership.
